My name is Rebekah Pappas and I live in Atlanta, GA. Having lived in the DC area for three years before moving to Atlanta, I have to say that I am so excited to be going back to visit for this seminar!. I have a background in accounting and work full time as the VP of Finance for a local mortgage/real estate/investment advisory company. I became interested in photography when I met my husband and I have been shooting weddings with him for the last five years. Having had some life changing events in the last year, I decided that it was time to regain focus on our original business plan: to build a business that we can work together on full time. With that in mind, I’m taking the steps to branch into the portrait side of photography. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone next weekend and to getting lots of advice and tips from those who have been where I am now.

I met Rebekah’s husband, Charlie at the DWF convention last month. What a delightful man, we can’t wait to meet you too, Rebekah!

Meet our students…Jenni Green

12 02 2008

My name is Jenni Green and I have been studying photography for about 8 years now. I went to school for both photography and graphic design, and ended up working more in design simply because I never thought I’d really make it financially as a photographer. I am currently a print designer at an architecture firm, but everyday I am realizing that I’d really prefer to leave my desk job and run around with a camera instead! While I have done portrait work in the past for friends and neighbors, I really consider myself at square one as far as creating a real photography business. I am SO excited to meet everyone and spend the weekend learning, learning, learning. I am fortunate enough to have met Diana and Justine, and even got to see Justine in action at a wedding last December. See you all soon!

Meet our students…Emily Deisroth

Hello.. Emily Deisroth here. My studio has been up and running in Washington DC for close to 3 years. I have learned photography through classes, books, friends, seminars and oh yes.. making lots of mistakes. Luckily I have 2 kids and a cat to be my unwilling subjects. I shoot weddings, families and everything that has a pulse (although I have shot cuts of meat and found it rather enjoyable to photograph something that does not move) … I am finding that i really need to deal with my pricing structure AND get the courage to say “sorry” when people ask if I can lower my prices. Being in the business of photography is a whole different game than taking really good pictures..Even with a Masters degree in Taxation and background in accounting.. I can’t quite get a grip on the business side. HELP!

Looking forward to meeting everyone in a few weeks!

Emily, we look forward to meeting you too!

Meet Jen Capone. Jen trained as a professional photographer at FIT in New York, and has been covering weddings for over 14 years. Jen is making the trek down from Philly because:

“I have the “i’m afraid to charge for what i do because i can’t imagine people ever would pay for it” disease. Even though my area fits my demographic. I need this workshop.”

Thank you Jen, we are so excited to meet you! Visit Jen’s blog at http://jencapone.blogspot.com

Welcome to the modern portrait blog

5 02 2008

Diana and I are very excited that our first seminar meeting of the Modern Portrait is coming up in just 2.5 weeks in Washington DC! We have been very busy working on our curriculum and boy do we have a lot to say! :)

We are almost full for the DC seminar (Feb 23-24) but we still have 6 seats left. So, in the spirit of giving back to the photographic community, we’ve decided to give away a scholarship to one lucky person who wants to attend our DC seminar. There is no criteria for this particular scholarship, anyone is eligible, even if you are already signed up…we will refund your deposit if you win.

This is a blogathon contest. All you have to do to enter, is post a tidbit on your blog about the seminar with our logo & a link to our website, http://themodernportrait.com. Then send me an email at justine@themodernportrait.com to let me know that it’s been done. Once you’ve done that, I’ll put your name into a drawing which will be done at random to select the winner. That’s it, easy enough, right? Ah but there’s one more thing, whomever gets the most click-throughs to our site will also win a $200 credit towards tuition that can be applied to this or any future Modern Portrait seminar. These prizes are totally transferable so if you can’t attend yourself, you can give it away!!!

Let the games begin, this contest closes on Monday, February 11 at 5pm PST. I will post the winners on Wednesday, Feb. 13th. Blog away!
